Water & Waves: Maritime Life at The Lofts
One of the most captivating aspects of staying at The Lofts is how close it puts you to Knysna’s waterways. Located on Thesen Island, the property looks west across the estuary, offering some of the best sunset views in town. But it’s not just about the view — being on the water means guests have easy access to a range of maritime experiences.
Paddling into the Estuary
For guests who want to get on the water themselves, The Lofts provides canoes. You can launch from the property into the estuary and glide quietly through calm backwaters. In the soft light of early morning or late afternoon, it’s a peaceful way to explore, observe birdlife, and feel the water under your paddle. When the tide is in, the estuary takes on a different character — deeper, more reflective, and full of life.
Local Fishing Traditions
Right from the pier near your stay, you may see local fishermen at work. Depending on the tide, they’ll be pumping for bait, setting out lines, or hauling in their catch. Watching this is like seeing a living tradition — it’s not just a tourist spectacle but a slice of daily life, authentic and grounded in Knysna’s maritime heritage.
Ocean Odyssey: Wildlife & Eco Tours
A short walk from The Lofts brings you to Ocean Odyssey, Knysna’s leading marine operator and a fantastic way to experience the area from the water. They offer three daily departures from their jetty on Thesen Island (weather permitting), with seasonal whale-watching tours from June to November when humpback and southern right whales move through the area.
For the rest of the year, their Marine Eco Tour explores the estuary, caves and cliffs, often with sightings of dolphins, Cape fur seals, penguins and a variety of seabirds.
You can also opt for their shorter Heads Adventure, a 45-minute trip through the estuary and out toward the Knysna Heads, complete with insightful commentary on the region’s ecology and history.
For guests who prefer something slower and closer to the water, they offer SUP and kayak rentals too.
Ocean Odyssey is also Blue Flag accredited, ensuring their operations meet high standards for environmental management and safety.
Sailing in Style with Ocean Sailing Charters
If you prefer to relax while someone else takes the helm, Ocean Sailing Charters runs luxury catamaran cruises just minutes from The Lofts. Their flagship, LaraBella, is a 55-foot catamaran with spacious lounges, trampolines, a bar, braai facilities and comfortable cabins.
Guests can choose between a Scenic Day Cruise of about an hour and forty minutes or a two-and-a-half-hour Sunset Cruise, which includes a complimentary glass of bubbly and light snacks. Longer or private charters open up even more options, from swimming and snorkelling to SUP sessions, depending on the conditions.
Private trips can be fully customised too — whether you want a braai onboard, a DJ or live musician, or even a private chef. Most cruises travel through the Knysna Heads and, when the sea allows, venture out into the Indian Ocean.
Nest at Sunset
One of the best places to soak in all of this is from Nest, The Lofts’ deck. As the sun begins to dip, pour a glass of champagne or a cocktail, and just watch. Boats — both charter and private — drift past. The estuary reflects the colours of the sky. There’s a calmness that feels almost deliberate, like the water took a breath and held it just for you.
